Cases for CareRosie's Garage Is the First Recipient of Cases for CareBentley Prince Street's Cases for Care program began with a desire to repurpose used sample cases. BPS associates transform each case into a world of fun for children - filled with stickers, notepads, pencils and more. In November 2003, Rosie's Garage, an after school tutoring program, became the first recipient of Cases for Care. Rosie's Garage was founded in 1991 by Rose Espinoza in response to the rising gang activity in her La Habra neighborhood. After conducting some research, she found that most parents in her community were not fluent in English. Due to the language barrier, they couldn't help their children with their homework and the children were not thriving in school. The gang activity was spurred by the lack of organized after school activities. Rosie gained support from the local neighborhood housing services, and with donated tables and chairs set up in her garage, she began providing free after school tutoring for 12 students. Since the program's humble beginning in 1994, Rosie's Garage has added four more sites and has gained national attention in the media. The program now serves more than 100 students and sponsors fundraisers to provide student scholarships. Cases for Care at All Saints Church - Willard Elementary SchoolIn December 2003, Bentley Prince Street associates delivered 35 Cases for Care to the All Saints Church's Willard Elementary School for use in the school's tutoring program. Willard Elementary School has a diverse student body residing in the northwest and southeast Pasadena areas. In addition to the student tutoring program on Tuesdays, they also provide volunteers to help parents who are developing their English speaking skills.Previous Page |
