InterfaceFABRIC Dyehouse - Guilford, Maine Success in Waste Elimination/Environmentally Benign Chemical UseStaff members at the InterfaceFABRIC Dyehouse in Guilford, Maine constantly evaluate their chemical processes in the interest of eliminating waste and using more environmentally benign chemicals and processes. Dyehouse staff members work directly with their vendors to evaluate process chemicals being used in the plant, focusing on content, concentration requirements and environmental impact.Case in PointThe dyehouse manager felt that the dyehouse operations were using more anti-static agent in their process than was necessary. He saw the potential to eliminate waste while also decreasing the amount and concentration of chemicals needed to dye the fibers. After comparing available anti-static agents, the dyehouse determined that it could use 83% less of an alternative anti-static product and benefit from substantial cost savings. The dyehouse switched to the new anti-static product alternative, and as a result of the success they experienced, many process chemicals are now rigorously tested prior to purchase. The dyehouse manager recently instituted a second chemical product change at the InterfaceFABRIC dyehouse, resulting in reduced waste and additional cost savings. The dyehouse eliminated the use of acetic acid, and found a more benign alternative. Not only is the team consistently striving for environmentally friendly products because of their QUEST commitment; it is also an established goal for their ISO 14001 certification-something that the team members have worked very hard to obtain.
