For the sake of humankind's continued survival, enjoying acceptable and healthy lifestyles for all, industrialized civilization must recognize and accept an imperative. The imperative of our times, and all time to come, is that the industrial system adapt to its utter dependence on the natural world. If the limits on nature's ability to supply humankind's demands for eco-services: air, water, energy, materials, food, and waste processing are not respected, we will kill ourselves. We cannot live without those services. Earth is finite in its ability to supply them. Present ways just cannot go on and on and on without dire consequences.

Interface has recognized and embraced this imperative; it seeks to pioneer a new industrial model and to become a sustainable industrial enterprise. That means a petro-intensive company (for its energy and its raw materials) that severs umbilical ties to Earth for petro-resources and eliminates all abusive emissions -- solid, liquid, and gaseous -- from its processes, products, and services.

That is a tall order, but if we can learn to harvest yesteryear's products and convert them into tomorrow's feed-stocks, drive all of our processes with renewable energy, convert those processes to energy-efficient, cyclical, benign, and waste-free processes, we will achieve sustainability: taking nothing from Earth that is not rapidly and naturally renewable and doing no harm to the biosphere. This is our vision, and we are committed to a course of realizing the vision by the year 2020.
